Cardiac Kids/Pack ('82 NC State, Wittenburg to Charles)
It’s considered one of the most famous endings in college basketball championship history. The favored and top ranked team with multiple future NBA superstars loved to dunk the basketball, earning the nickname, “Phi Slamma Jama.” The underdog, led by one of the most beloved coaches in sports history had lost ten of twenty seven games during the regular season. During the national tournament, the underdog played in so many close and stirring games they earned the team nickname “Cardiac Kids”. The favored team lost a lead of 6 points in the final 3 minutes allowing the cardiac kids to strike once again. A 6 foot 7 inch sophomore grabbed a missed 35 foot desperation shot taken with 3 seconds remaining and “dunked” it for a surprising last second 54-52 victory. The Cardiac Kids (also called "Cardiac Pack") and their beloved coach went crazy as they upset the highly favored team from Houston.
