Great Clutch Pass (Coker to Stewart)

The teams from Clemson and Tuscaloosa had been ranked #1 and #2 in the polls since early November.  The top ranked team was led by their dual pass-run threat, a superb QB who had finished 3rd in the Heisman Trophy voting. The #2 team was playing for its 4th national championship in 7 years, boasting the nation’s second stingiest defense, and the Heisman winner. Both teams scored two touchdowns and missed a field goal during the first half.  A seesaw second half was filled with thrills. But at the game’s then most critical moment – a 3rd and 11, down 24-21 in the 4th quarter – the less heralded quarterback from the second ranked team passed his next huge throw of the night from his own 33-yard line, connecting to his teammate at the 20 yard line for a 38 yard gain, which led to a game tying field goal. Perfect pass. Perfect timing. Incredible clutch pass.
