In Real Madrid’s 12th UEFA Champions League finals appearance they played Bayer Leverkusen. Bayer surprised many by reaching the finals, but were no match for Real Madrid and their superstar, Zinedine Zidane. After a goal early on by Real Madrid, Leverkusen were able to quickly answer, tying the match at one goal apiece.
Just before the halftime whistle, Roberto Carlos received a difficult lead pass as he was streaking down the left sideline past his defender. Without taking a touch, Carlos, facing the crowd, blindly kicked the ball high over his head. As he turned to see where the pass went, Zinedine Zidane was already waiting at the top of the box. Before the ball hit the pitch, Zidane wound up and launched the ball off of his left foot. As his body twisted from the momentum of the shot, the ball powered past the outstretched goalie's hands and into the top left of the net. Perfect volley!
