Appalachian Upset (Appalachian State vs. Michigan)

The home team from Ann Arbor entered the season as the preseason #5 team in the country, expected to both win its conference and fight for a national championship. The visiting team was not expected to put up much of a fight, happy just to gain some national exposure facing a powerhouse in week 1. The visiting team shocked the packed stadium by taking a 28-17 lead into halftime, but surrendered the lead to the heavy favorite 32-31 in the 4th quarter. A late drive brought a field goal opportunity for the unheralded upstart, which they made to take the lead 34-31 with 26 seconds left in the game. After a deep and dramatic pass completion, the favored home team would be able to escape a week 1 upset by completing a 37-yard field goal with 6 seconds left on the clock. The attempt was blocked, securing what was immediately hailed as one of the greatest upsets in college football history. Playmaker: Dominic V.
