Pinch Hit Walk-off Series Win (Gibson)

The league’s MVP was hobbled with injuries to both legs (bad left hamstring; swollen right knee) and was not expected to play. Fans grimaced seeing him walk, the pain so severe. Despite that, he was called on to pinch-hit with 2 outs in the 9th, his home team down 4-3. Facing the top closer of his generation, he answered the call with a 2-run walk-off homer to win the World Series game. An iconic moment in every respect, it is one of the greatest home runs in baseball history, surely one of its fiercest, gutsiest efforts, and defines this player’s strength, courage and contributions to the game. Playmaker: Pete C.
